Samsung Smart TV Leadership Reaches Milestone with 2 Millionth Application Downloaded

Samsung Apps Reaches Mark in Less than a Year; Total Downloads Doubles from 1 Million in Less Than Two Months

Samsung Electronics Co, Ltd. today announced that Samsung Apps, the world’s first application store for the television, has reached its two millionth TV application download globally. The milestone is the latest in Samsung’s Smart TV category leadership, which was on full display at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas earlier this month. Samsung reached the 2 million mark within a year of the launch of Samsung Apps and the number of apps downloaded has doubled since November, when it reached one million downloads.

Samsung Apps allows users to purchase and download applications from a wide variety of content and service providers, directly from their Smart TVs. Samsung Apps boasts around 380 applications designed for Smart TV, of which 259 are free. The store is currently available in 120 countries around the world.

“This achievement and the short period in which it was achieved demonstrate the rapidly growing popularity of applications and content for Smart TVs,” said Mr. Sangchul Lee, Senior Vice President of Samsung’s Visual Display Business. “Samsung’s leadership role in this category has paid off and allowed us to provide new experiences for consumers that are more rich and integrated than any before.”

Mr. SangSuk Roh, President of Samsung Levant said: “We are keen to offer our customers a unique opportunity to experience Samsung applications with the Smart TV. Our plans and vision aims at meeting the customer’s needs, and this new technology of Smart TVs is a qualitative leap and technological revolution in the screens industry.”

Interest in applications on Smart TV increased at a tremendous pace during the holiday season. When Samsung Apps reached one million downloads in November, it had been just 268 days since the store’s launch. The two million-mark was reached just 53 days later.

Some of the most frequently downloaded applications from Samsung Apps are YouTube, Hulu Plus, ESPN Next Level, AccuWeather, Google Maps and Texas Holdem, showcasing global demand for Samsung Smart TV entertainment experiences across popular consumer hobby areas – sports, movies and gaming. After reaching one million downloads, consumers have downloaded an average of 100,000 applications every five days.

To spur Smart TV innovation, Samsung is also working closely with the developer community to bring new applications to the Samsung Apps library. Throughout 2010, Samsung held “Free the TV Developer Days” around the world, bringing together developers and notable leaders across the connected TV ecosystem to discuss and plan for the next era of Smart TV. Accompanying the Developer Days were contests such as the “Free the TV Challenge” (http://www.freethetvchallenge.com/) in the United States, which announced its winners earlier this month at CES.

“The developer community is a critical component to maintaining the momentum and growth of Samsung Apps for the TV,” said Mr. Kyungshik Kevin Lee, Vice President of Samsung’s Visual Display Business. “These talented individuals will bring depth and personalization to an environment built initially with our industry-leading partners.”

Samsung announced a series of high-level partnerships during a keynote address by Visual Display Business President Boo-Keun Yoon, including alliances with cable television leaders Comcast and Time Warner as well as online video leaders Hulu and Adobe.

Samsung Zooms into the Future with New WB700

The ultra-slim 24X zoom camera comes packed with features for the photographer who demands more

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd, a global leader in digital media and digital convergence technologies, announced today the launch of the new WB700, the ultra-slim camera with an impressive 24X zoom function, capable of delivering superb quality images whether your subject is near or far.

The camera features a 24mm ultra-wide Schneider KREUZNACH lens to capture the perfect wide shot, as well as an outstanding 24X zoom function, made up of an 18X optical zoom and 1.3X Smart Zoom. The WB700 delivers sharp images with incredible detail in close up thanks to the camera’s 16 Megapixel (MP) CCD sensor. The flexibility of the WB700’s lens and zoom functions means that you can capture a broad landscape in the same 16MP detail as a bubbling brook in the distance.

Mr. Hyunho Chung, Executive Vice President and Head of the Digital Imaging Business, Samsung Electronics, said: “We understand that many of our customers come to us for the very best and most up-to-date technology available, which is why we have chosen to bring all our innovation together in the WB700 for both the advanced and novice photographer, giving a balance of professional quality imaging and the kind of usability anyone can master. On top of the core excellence of the WB700’s 16MP 24mm lens with OIS and Schneider KREUZNACH super-zoom, we have added features that add surprise and delight to the photography experience, such as our new smart filters, the smart lens effect and zoom noise cancellation, adding value throughout the photography experience.”

The successor to the successful WB600 and WB650 models, the WB700 also includes Samsung’s latest advances in HD video technology so users can capture high quality video footage as well as still images. It also features Smart Filter 2.0 - artistic filters in modes such as ‘soft focus’, ‘half-tone dot’ and ‘cinema’ alongside traditional features such as ‘fish-eye’, ‘miniature’ and ‘sketch’, giving entertaining and professional finishes at the touch of a button.

Zoom Noise Reduction

Samsung has also introduced new innovation to remove zoom noise from video content. Unlike camcorders, because of the long zoom capabilities of cameras such as the WB700, users reported that their videos were being interrupted by the sound of the camera’s mechanical optical zoom sliding backwards and forwards. The WB700 uses an advanced noise reduction algorithm that actively cancels out the zoom noise, giving you uninterrupted clear sound to complement your clear High Definition movies.

The future is here - Samsung 'Smart TV'

Samsung Electronics, a leading company in electronics and digital media, announced the launch of Smart TV. This new product offers features and applications that allow viewers to enjoy their favourite channels.

Samsung's 'Smart TV' concept is all about allowing you to do more, yet keeping the entire experience surprisingly simple, rich and interactive. For example, haven't you always hated flicking through the hundreds of channels streamed via satellite, trying desperately to find a programme that catches your interest? Well, with Samsung's line of Smart TVs that no longer is a problem – just type in keywords, search for the content you'd like and select what interests you from the results. And it's not about just sticking to the range of channels that are broadcasted – you can get everything from movies, YouTube clips, updated news streams from the web and even personal content delivered and displayed right on the screen using the Samsung Internet@TV and AllShare features. It's entertainment on your own terms.

The Samsung AllShare feature uses wireless technology on your TV to sync and access content from other devices including your home computer and mobile phone. The possibilities are endless – play your favourite tunes, stored on your MP3 player or from your PC, right from your TV or view those priceless photos on your digital camera on the big screen with the whole family.

Mr. SangSuk Roh, president of Samsung Levant said: “Samsung is the first company to launch the Smart TV in the world. This revolutionary technology will change the standards of home screens and it’s a qualitative leap in the screens industry. We promise our customers with more innovative and creative products that add to the home entertainment appliances.”

Samsung's Internet@TV includes downloadable widgets and apps like Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, Flickr and more that can be found at the Samsung Apps web store – the world's first TV application store, which is at the very core of the whole Smart TV concept.

With just your TV you can stay abreast on the latest news, entertainment, business or other information, watch movies and television shows, view your personal photos using the Getty Images App, play games through the Texas Hold 'Em Up or Sudoku Apps, and even communicate with loved ones on Skype. Do you interact with your TV? Chances are, you don't. You watch a programme, but you don't necessarily engage with it. Samsung hopes to change all that by making the experience a two-way street. You can watch an episode of your favourite show and then easily post your thoughts on it through Samsung Apps.

No other television brand can boast a dedicated TV app store, which makes Samsung's new Smart TV concept a remarkable achievement. But perhaps, the biggest win is the fact that App store can meet and cater to the demands of the local market – with special apps released just for certain countries in the language of the nation.

The user interface of the TV is neat, designed to keep user experience as the top priority. With Samsung's organised layout and dedicated categories, It's easy to find and select the application or feature of your choice on-screen with minimal hassle.

And a television really isn't just about the screen; it's about the finer details and experience. Samsung's new Smart TVs come with an elegant and smooth touch remote control, featuring a virtual QWERTY keyboard that makes searching for specific content all the more easier. A few taps of your finger is all it takes to get the television to obey your every command. What's more – you can use it as a universal remote, allowing you to control other electronic devices in the room and not just your TV.

Samsung Smart TVs pack in some spectacular technology features, with the absolute standout being the powerful 3D transformation feature. Instead of waiting in vain for the latest 3D content to be released, your Samsung Smart TV can take regular 2D movies, TV shows and other content viewed on your screen and transform them immediately and seamlessly into 3D. The end result is a crisp, clear viewing experience with amazing depth.

With an ever-expanding base of applications just for your television available through Samsung Apps, the most interactive viewing experience imaginable to date, and an instant 2D to 3D conversion feature that promises to add more depth to your life, Samsung's range of Smart TVs are quietly leading a revolution. Home entertainment will never be the same again.

Samsung readies green memory with advanced chip stacking technology after extensive system-level testing

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., the world leader in advanced memory technology, today announced the development of an eight gigabyte (GB) registered dual inline memory module based on its advanced Green DDR3 DRAM. The new memory module, which has just been successfully tested by major Samsung customers, delivers superior performance, in particular because of its use of a three-dimensional (3D) chip stacking technology referred to as ‘through silicon via' (TSV).

Mr. SangSuk Roh, President of Samsung Levant said: “The launch of this new product stems from Samsung’s concern to offering advanced technologies through high performance and quality products. This new green memory offers high capacity and performance, and reduces the consumption of power.”

“At Samsung, we’re well positioned to accommodate early market demand for our state-of-the-art TSV technology as the industry continues to forge forward with even further advances in bonding technology to enable greater performance and operational efficiency,“ said Dr. Chang-Hyun Kim, senior vice president and Samsung fellow, memory product planning & application engineering at Samsung Electronics. “Our 40nm-class* RDIMM being announced today marks the introduction of a more advanced eco-friendly “Green Memory” product line up utilizing 3D-TSV technology that is expected to enhance the leadership of Samsung and our allies in server and enterprise storage.”

An 8GB RDIMM utilizing Samsung’s 3D TSV technology saves up to 40 percent of the power consumed by a conventional RDIMM. Also, the TSV technology allows for a dramatic improvement in memory chip density that is expected to offset the decrease of memory sockets in next generation server systems. In the face of a 30 percent decrease in memory slots in next-generation servers, the TSV technology will be able to raise the DRAM density by more than 50 percent, making it highly attractive for high-density, high-performance server systems.

Samsung’s TSV technology is a key to solving the paradox of driving lower power consumption in servers, while increasing memory capacity and improving performance.

The TSV technology fabricates micron-sized holes through the silicon vertically, with a copper filling. By using the ‘through silicon via’ bonding process instead of conventional wire bonding, signal lines are shortened significantly, enabling the multi-stacked chip to function at levels comparable to a single silicon chip.

Already passing customer performance tests, Samsung is readying its TSV technology for a variety of server applications having stringent performance and power demands.

Increasingly widespread adoption of the 3D TSV technology is expected to take place from 2012. Samsung plans to apply the higher performance and lower power features of its TSV technology to 30nm-class* and finer process nodes.
