Samsung Shows Consumers the Path to Creating a Smarter Life at IFA 2010

Unveiling of Much Anticipated GALAXY Tab Leads Array of New World Class Products to Help Consumers Live a Smarter Life

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd, revealed its exciting new vision for creating a smarter life” for consumers today at its IFA 2010 press conference , unveiling the eagerly awaited GALAXY Tab and creating an exciting new category in the emerging tablet market. Samsung’s product portfolio, which also includes an array of new visual display, IT and digital imaging solutions announced today, will be displayed September 2-8 in Hall 20 at Messe Berlin.

Samsung reinforced its leadership across its many product categories during today’s event. In addition to the launch of GALAXY Tab, Samsung unveiled a host of new 3D offerings and announced the Samsung Smart TV Challenge to create new apps for Samsung’s Smart TVs. Samsung also added to its growing portfolios in the IT solutions and digital imaging categories. In each case, the announcements supported the pillars of Samsung’s strength – the ability to create new product categories and create a smarter life for consumers.

“Software is the connective tissue for creating a smarter life,” said BK Yoon, President, Visual Display Business, Samsung Electronics, during his remarks opening the event today. “It’s the intelligence that moves content from one device to another – binding our product suites into a collective whole – and empowering consumers to orchestrate their lifestyles as never before.”

Mr. SangSuk Roh, President of Samsung Levant said: “we are keen to feed the Levant market with all these advanced and interesting options, and this is a longstanding commitment to change and develop the digital and technological scene in the region.”

Creating a Smarter Life
Before hundreds of IFA 2010 attendees, Yoon gave the opening remarks prior to a showcase of Samsung’s 2010 product lineup, highlighted by the GALAXY Tab and Smart TV.

Yoon opened the event with a five-minute address that highlighted Samsung’s success in 2010 – the first two quarters have each yielded record operating profits – as well its category leadership in TV and mobile. One of the clearest indications of this leadership is Samsung’s leadership in 3D TVs, where projected sales of over 2 million units worldwide has raised the bar in the industry.

Yoon also detailed Samsung’s continued strides in environmental management, noting how the company’s PlanetFirst initiative invested more than $865 million in 2009, putting Samsung on track to meet its goal of being one of the world’s most environmentally friendly companies by 2013.

A Galaxy of Possibilities
Samsung introduced the GALAXY Tab, the company’s first “smart media device.” Powered by Android™ 2.2, GALAXY Tab brings a unique mobile experience allowing more possibilities on the go. The 7inch display offers an optimal media environment to enjoy reading books or newspapers, full web browsing, watching videos, and listening to music. Moreover, users can continuously communicate via e-mail, voice and video call, SMS/MMS or social network with the optimized user interface.

To provide abundant content to its users, Samsung GALAXY Tab comes with the ‘Readers Hub,’ Samsung’s unique e-reading application that provides easy access to a vast digital library. At the same time, Samsung unveils ‘Media Hub,’ a gateway to a world of films and videos, and ‘Music Hub,’ an application giving access to a wide range of music tunes. With GALAXY Tab, users have new powers to consume, create, and communicate from wherever they are.

3D Expansion & Arrival of Smart TV
Building on the success of its 3D launches earlier this year and subsequent market leadership, Samsung announced it will launch seven more 3D TV models during the second half of 2010 to expand its 3D total solution line-up in the European market. This expansion brings its total to an industry-leading 25 models, Included among these is a 50-inch Full HD 3D Plasma. Samsung is the only company which received the official ECO Flower certification from the European Union with plasma full line-up, excluding large sizes.

Joining these TVs will be six new 3D Blu-ray systems, including the C8900 Blu-ray player. The C8900 is the first 3D Blu-ray to combine recording and storing functionalities on a 500GB HDD with the ability to record and play back the HD and 3D broadcasting without losing Samsung’s unsurpassed picture quality.

Michael Zoeller, European Marketing Director for Television and Audio Visual Products, explained to the audience that while Samsung’s 3D leadership will continue to expand, it is also a part of a larger emerging trend – Smart TV. Zoeller displayed Samsung’s premium Smart 3D TV, the C9000, and discussed the growth of Samsung Apps for TV since its launch in January.

That growth is the basis for Samsung’s consecutive announcements of apps contests in Europe, Korea and United States. Samsung announced the Samsung Smart TV Challenge at IFA and more than 500,000 Euros will be awarded to developers across Europe for the best apps designed for Samsung TVs. To help developers understand Samsung’s Smart TV, the Samsung Apps platform and the SDK (Software Development Kit) for the contest, European Developer Days will be hosted in Germany, France, and the UK in October, and final winners will be announced in February 2011.

1 million Galaxy S Smartphones in 45 days in the US

The Android-based smartphones sold across the aisle from the iPhone 4 on AT&T and on T-Mobile, the nation's smallest major carrier.

Samsung's Galaxy S smartphone is a blockbuster globally and recent numbers show it is poised for similar success in the US. The high end smartphone boasts a super-thin form factor with 4-inch Super-AMOLED display and a speedy 1GHz Hummingbird processor.

The knock on Android so far has been that its success rests on the fact that it is sold on Verizon, the nations biggest and some say best mobile network. 'If the iPhone was sold on Verizon, no one would be buying Android.'

Furthermore, Samsung sold 1 million T-Mobile Vibrants and AT&T Captivates in less than a month and a half in the US. That emphatically proves that Android's sucess doesn't rely on AT&T's iPhone exclusivity.

Samsung launched on August 15th against the iPhone on AT&T with almost no marketing from the US's exclusive iPhone carrier. At the same time it launched on T-Mobile, the smallest carrier in the US. While T-Mobile did throw some resources at marketing their version, called Vibrant, their customer base is dwarfed by AT&T, Verizon and even Sprint.

Samsung's positive numbers are a result of selling superphones 'supercheap'. Google makes the OS for free on the back of ad revenues. Samsung, as a hardware OEM, makes great phone parts for Apple (AAPL) but can also do really well for itself without Apple's huge margins. You basically are getting a lighter iPhone 4-class phone with a bigger, brighter screen for a much cheaper price.

AT&T (T) and T-Mobile advertise their Galaxy S smartphones for $200 with plan, the same as an iPhone 4. While that may be true (and a whole other post), most people are buying these online for free or close to it. T-Mobile's Vibrant has previously been free (currently $49) online while AT&T's Captivate is free with a plan.

Competition between the two carriers also probably drives the price down significantly. AT&T doesn't have to compete against anyone in the US for iPhone sales.

The success isn't limited to the US. It took Samsung three weeks to sell a million Galaxy S smartphones globally and they did that before the device came to the US. Samsung announced it had sold 300,000 in S. Korea alone during that time and 900,000 for the quarter. By admittedly blurry comparison, Apple's iPhone sold three million iPhone 4s in the five biggest global markets in 22 days.

Samsung's first month and a half were impressive, however, consider that in the next two weeks, the phones go on sale at Verizon and Sprint. Sprint's Epic 4G has a physical keyboard,a front facing camera and is ready for pre-order at Amazon/launch on Tuesday, while Verizon's Fascinate version is already ready for pre-order at Best Buy for September 9th launch.

Samsung Sets Out Vision for Future of Digital Imaging at IFA 2010

Samsung introduces innovative, new camera and camcorder models designed to take the world’s camera market by storm

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd, a global leader in digital media technology, has today unveiled its latest ambitious digital imaging product innovations in support of the company’s goal to become a top three player in the market by 2012. The latest offerings fulfill Samsung’s vision of connecting consumers to every moment through digital imaging technology.

Samsung has continued to strengthen its offerings in the digital imaging industry in recent months, with a number of innovative technologies developed which capitalize on the strength of Samsung Electronics’ integrated technology expertise and company-wide investments in research and development. A primary area of innovation has been Samsung’s dual view compact digital cameras such as the recently launched ST600 and ST100 models, which give users the chance to capture the fun in front of the camera. Dual view technology is an area of the market that Samsung now has real ownership of, since the launch of the pioneering ST500 last year. The technology was inspired by Samsung’s unique insights and understanding of what consumers really want from their cameras, and the company’s ability to provide the best technology to meet people’s desires.

Samsung is also exhibiting its new full HD T10 camcorder, which is being launched during the show. The full HD T10 features a pioneering 20-degree Slanted Lens to ensure consumers can capture their video and photos without users suffering from the sore wrist often associated with camcorder use. The T10 also delivers stylish and affordable portability for capturing and editing video content on the move, with its small form and bright 2.7-inch AMOLED screen. Samsung is also showing users how to connect with the moment through additional digital imaging products, such as the new E10, ST80 and PL90 models, which incorporate innovative connectivity features.

Mr. SangSuk Roh, President of Samsung Levant said: “Samsung is considered a leading company in the innovation of digital products. Our participation in the IFA 2010 reaffirms our leadership in the advanced technologies industry which comes in line with our strategies to introduce the best to our customers.”

Mr SangJin Park, President of the Digital Imaging Business, Samsung Electronics, commented: “Living smartly and creatively whether you’re at home or on the move is an important part of today’s consumers’ lives and part of the vision we’re developing for our customers at Samsung. A camera is an emotional device that enables users to connect with important moments, when creating, capturing and sharing images. Cameras connect people. We have considered how and where people want to use and enjoy photography in their everyday lives throughout our new ranges and the innovative technology we have been pioneering this year, all on show at IFA 2010.”

Dual view models – exclusive Samsung offering
The newly-launched ST600 and ST100 feature 1.8-inch revolutionary dual LCD Screen technology, enabling users to capture the fun both in front of and behind the camera, and a 14-megapixel sensor, guarantee crisp and clear images. The products have the added benefit of giving consumers the convenience of accessing key features with a simple tilt or hand gesture, ensuring the easy management of images. Both models are available in four stylish, mood-inspired colors, including hot pink, gold, black and purple, and are encased in a slim and sleek compact frame with metallic finish to deliver a new sense of fun and modern functionality that will ensure users stand out from the crowd.

The new dual view range also comes equipped with high-quality Schneider KREUZNACH lens, supported by optical and digital image stabilization to achieve blur-free images. While the ST600 combines a powerful 27mm wide-angle focal length with a 5x optical zoom, the ST100 is the first Samsung dual view camera to feature an internal 5x optical zoom, keeping its design optimally chic (35mm focal-length). Both models incorporate innovative functions, including scene recognition technology, which analyzes the colour, brightness, motion and subject and then selects the appropriate scene mode for the customer, ensuring great quality images everytime.

The ultimate HD quality camcorder experience
The HMX-T10 model – the next generation in compact digital camcorders – encapsulates Samsung’s innovative point-and-shoot, full-HD resolution technology. The pioneering HMX-T10, with its innovative 20-degree Slanted Lens, allows users to handle the camcorder in a way that reduces stress on the wrist to capture special moments in any photography environment and ensure that quality images are captured and recorded through an easy-to-use experience for users..

Further enhancements to the overall recording experience can be found through the HMX-T10’s 2.7-inch Touch Screen LCD and its ability to capture video footage and still images at 4.7 mega-pixels at the same time. The HMX-T10 also features an advanced Back Side Illuminated CMOS Sensor, which provides twice the sensitivity of conventional CMOS sensors, and Optical Image Stabilization, so that whatever is captured remains blur-free. This innovative feature dramatically reduces image distortion and delivers clear video and images in any light conditions.

Meanwhile the HMX-E10 camcorder features a versatile, 270-degree Swivel Lens, to enable consumers to view and record from just about any angle. The camcorder has the additional built-in USB port feature, which allows users to connect the camcorder directly to any computer without added attachments like a USB cable, so consumers can share important moments wherever they are. The USB connection can also be used to charge the battery on the go. To further enhance the customer’s experience, at the heart of the E10 is a large high-performance 1/3.2 inch CMOS sensor that captures impressive full-HD resolution videos.

Time to share – the well-connected consumer
Both the PL90 and ST80 are examples of Samsung’s continuing commitment to bringing wireless capabilities to the digital imaging world and connecting any moment between a consumer and their loved ones. The 14.2-megapixel point-and-shoot ST80 joins Samsung’s growing line-up of Wi-Fi enabled cameras, representing the third generation of Samsung’s wireless technology leadership and including Samsung’s AllShare (DNLA) connectivity, a 3x optical zoom and large 3.0 inch wide touch-screen with HD video recording.

Not to be outshone, the 12.2-mega-pixel PL90 digital camera, featuring a built-in USB connector enabling consumers to capture images and connect to a computer on the move without the need for additional wires or cords. The USB connector means users can share content with friends and family quickly and easily, with the camera’s plug-and-play capabilities, including the Auto-install intelli-studio software, and instant access to any computer. The innovative features of the PL90 also include Samsung’s new Smart Auto technology and intelligent Smart Auto function, so customers can capture the perfect picture in almost any conditions.
